Healthy Smiles
Oral health is considered to be a basic human right.
Oral health plays a major role in overall health and well being.
Poor oral hygiene might lead to a variety of diseases, including dental caries, tooth loss, oral cancer, periodontal disease and oral manifestations of HIV infections. Moreover, it has been linked to cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

After decades of war and political conflict, there are over 1 million children orphaned. Unfortunately, these children do not always have access to oral health education.
With our project ‘Healthy smiles’ we aim to provide children in orphanages in Iraq with basic oral health education. Weqaya members with a medical background will visit orphanages in Iraq and hand out dental kits that include brushes, tooth paste, plaque detectors, informative flyers and toys related to oral health. Additionally, our Weqaya members will show children, in a playful manner, how to effectively brush their teeth and how they can maintain their own oral health. We will work together with supervisors of orphanages and provide them with all the necessary tools to monitor the oral health of children.
